How to fund for post-secondary?

Updated: Feb 9, 2021

Here are some quick and convenient tips for you to start planning and searching for funding opportunities for your education. In this blog post, we’ll share the ways you can start your search.

Congrats!

You’ve received acceptance letters from the post-secondary institutions that you applied to and have along with it, deadlines to pay for your first instalment of school fees. Maybe you’re slightly panicking at the dollar signs showing up in front of you and dejectedly wondering how you’re going to pay for 2+ years of post-secondary education…

Before you go into full panic mode, let’s just take a moment… take three deep breaths.

Don’t get too into your head.

There are many, many (and we really do mean many) ways to fund your education. Remember, the BC system is built to help students succeed, no matter their financial background.

Here are some ways to give a head start:

1. Check with your institution.

Always start with the school you’ve been accepted to as your very first step. If you’re in good academic standing, institutions will typically offer scholarships or awards along with your acceptance letter, should you choose to study with them. Institutions will also have a financial aid office designed to specifically help you find information on funding opportunities at the school and in the community. Take the time to make an appointment with this department, it’s a great starting point.

2. Scour the internet.

Start with a simple Google search: scholarships in Canada.

There are a ton of opportunities for Canadian high school students. Some offered by government or public sector organizations and some by privates. All of these awards will have their own eligibility criteria so really take the time to read through all your available options. There are over $5 million in scholarships that goes unclaimed every year simply because no one applied to them. So take the time to do your research and look thoroughly at all your options.

Check out scholarshipscanada.com for a compilation!

In closing

These are obviously some bare-bone minimums of how you can start looking for funding opportunities to support your post-secondary journey. But we hope this will give you at least a good starting point in your search.

“Education is a right, not a privilege.” Student success is the epitome of a healthy society. There are supports in place to help you obtain the education that you want, no matter your financial or socioeconomic background.

Best of luck!
